The Joy of Lettering – A Review

I have been away again, I know. But if you follow me on Instagram, you’ll see how busy I’ve been! And while on Instagram, I received a message from the extremely talented Gabri Joy Kirkendall asking me if I’d like to receive a copy of her new book: “The Joy of Lettering”! Wow! Yay! Of course, I said yes. 🙂

The Joy of Lettering is by both Gabri Joy Kirkendall and Jaclyn Anne Escalera. It is an amazing hand lettering book that includes beautiful illustrations, wonderful bits of information, and some super fun and very creative projects.

I have been going over this book repeatedly since I received it in the mail. It is such an awesome resource for anyone, whether you are a beginner or have been hand lettering for a while. This is becoming a great source of inspiration for myself and I have already started a couple projects that I will share later in future posts. But for now, I can tell you that they put so much thought into this and created something amazing!

I absolutely love how they started with, not only the basic elements, but also the history of typography before sharing the different styles. Once you get through that, there are wonderful techniques they share and those awesome creative projects that they break down into step by step, so that they are easy to follow and understand.

Some of My Favorite Projects

A couple of my personal favorites would have to be creating the typography filled wrapping paper and the colorful, artistic envelopes.

They are going to be super handy during the holiday season (and of course any other time there are gifts given 🙂 ). And another thing that I think is HUGE is that they break down how to digitize your lettering (including creating fonts)!! It took me years to figure it out on my own. (Not even joking a little.) I love figuring things out on my own and sometimes that takes a really long time!

Some Final Thoughts

I hope that I have peaked your interest and inspired you to check out this amazing book. And if you’d like to learn more about Gabri Joy, be sure to check her out on her site.

If you’d like even more, she was also part of creating another lettering book; Creative Lettering and Beyond which is also amazing.
